About the Expedition

Ecuador offers not only a thrilling mountaineering experience but also a rich cultural adventure. This expedition focuses on building technical skills and gaining mountaineering experience, culminating in a summit of Cayambe, Ecuador’s third-highest peak. This impressive volcano is heavily glaciated, with a summit elevation of 18,996 feet (5,790 meters). It is also the highest point on Earth’s equator.

Although Cayambe is somewhat remote, it’s quite accessible. Unlike the lengthy journeys required for other Andean or Himalayan peaks, this adventure allows you to travel, acclimatize, and conquer Cayambe within a week.

Your adventure begins in Quito, where your guide will greet you upon arrival and escort you to your hotel for the night. The next day, you’ll explore the streets of Quito, a UNESCO World Heritage site, while acclimatizing to the altitude.

The first acclimatization hike will take you up Rucu Pichincha, a peak accessible directly from downtown Quito via a gondola that lifts you to about 3800m. From there, you’ll hike to the summit at 15,413’ (4,698m).

Next, the journey heads north toward Otavalo and eventually to Cayambe. Along the way, you’ll continue acclimatizing by climbing Fuya Fuya, which reaches 14,000 feet (4,263 meters), offering breathtaking views of Cayambe. Upon arriving at the Cayambe Mountain Hut, you’ll receive essential mountain training, covering high-altitude physiology, climbing techniques on the glacier, crampon and ice tool usage, glacier travel, snow and ice anchors, and crevasse rescue. This training is crucial to prepare you for the Cayambe climb and future mountaineering endeavors.

Once acclimatized and trained, you’ll set out early from the Refugio for the summit push. Reaching nearly 19,000 feet (5,790m/18,996ft), the summit of Cayambe offers a rewarding challenge and stunning views of the surrounding peaks, including the glaciated summits of Antisana, Cotopaxi, and Chimborazo. After descending, you’ll return to Otavalo and relax in the peaceful gardens of the Hacienda Pinsaqui.

After summiting Cayambe, some climbers will return home, while others may choose to continue with a 7-day extension to summit Cotopaxi and Chimborazo. This extension gives you the opportunity to stand atop two more majestic peaks, with Chimborazo soaring over 20,000 feet.

Cotopaxi, the second peak, stands at 19,347 feet. Similar to Cayambe, it offers an exciting climb, featuring a steep headwall just before reaching the summit rim. After celebrating at the top, you’ll descend back to your lodging.

The final challenge is Chimborazo, where you’ll establish a camp before your summit attempt. This peak requires a demanding 10-14 hour climb through rocky and glaciated terrain, culminating at 20,703 feet (6310 meters). Reaching the top of Chimborazo is an outstanding achievement and a fitting conclusion to your expedition, equipping you with the experience needed for future global climbs.

FAQs

No prior technical experience or previous high-altitude climbs are required — that’s the point of the program. This expedition is built specifically for motivated beginners who want structured instruction in glacier travel, crampon use, rope team movement, and crevasse rescue while working toward a summit objective. You’ll learn these fundamentals with your guide in the field before tackling Ecuador’s glaciated peaks.

The itinerary builds acclimatization into each day by progressively increasing elevation — beginning with urban altitude in Quito, continuing with challenging acclimatization hikes (such as Rucu Pichincha or Fuya Fuya), and culminating in higher camps on Cayambe. This phased approach gives your body time to adapt, reduces the risk of altitude sickness, and improves your chance of summit success.

Throughout the course you’ll receive hands-on instruction in essential alpine skills including effective use of ice axes and crampons, safe glacier travel techniques, rope team movement, and basic crevasse rescue. The emphasis is on applying these skills directly in real terrain so that climbers leave with both knowledge and confidence for future high-altitude objectives.

Wasatch Mountain Guides keeps team sizes small to ensure personalized coaching. Your guide incorporates skill training within the expedition rhythm — for example, techniques are practiced on approach days and reinforced in summit preparation. This means you’re not just learning in isolation, but applying skills directly as terrain and conditions demand.

Beyond climbing and skills training, this trip includes travel logistics from Quito, acclimatization hikes, and the chance to experience Ecuador’s vibrant culture and varied landscapes. Expect comfortable lodging in town with community meals, travel by road to base areas, and a supportive team environment throughout your ascent. This holistic approach makes it both an educational and rewarding adventure.
