Typical Itinerary

Day 1 — Gear Check & Approach to High Camp
Meet at the trailhead for a full gear check and trip briefing. From there, skin up snow-covered terrain toward a glaciated high camp. Along the way, guides introduce glacier travel systems, skinning efficiency, and terrain management. The evening is spent preparing for summit day.

Day 2 — Ski Ascent to the Summit
An early alpine start takes the group upward via glaciated slopes toward the summit plateau. Depending on conditions, travel may involve skins, booting, crampons, and rope systems. After reaching the summit area and taking in sweeping views of the North Cascades, the group prepares for the ski descent. After a long ski descent we’ll return to camp for some grub and rest.

Day 3 — Ski Descent & Exit
This day is reserved for a summit attempt in the event of poor weather. After the summit and ski, we’ll return to camp and pack up for our egress back to the vehicle (hopefully skiing all the way back to the vehicle!).

If we successfully the day previously, we will have a morning skills clinic and then ski out when finished.

FAQs

Our Mount Baker 3-day program is priced higher because we intentionally keep our guide-to-client ratio at a maximum of 3:1, which is significantly lower than most major operators. Many companies run this trip at 4:1, 5:1, or even higher. Fewer clients per guide means:

  • More individual instruction and coaching — especially important for skills like glacier travel, cramponing, and rope systems

  • Higher safety margins on complex glacier terrain

  • More efficient summit attempts with less waiting and less crowding

  • A better overall experience rather than a “herd-style” trip

In short, you’re not paying more for extras — you’re paying for more guide time, more attention, and a higher standard of safety and instruction. We choose to run smaller teams because we believe Mount Baker deserves a more professional, personal, and safety-focused approach than a high-volume model allows.

This ski mountaineering program is designed for participants with prior backcountry skiing experience who are comfortable on variable snow conditions and intermediate to advanced terrain. You should be confident skinning uphill for multiple hours, able to handle glaciated snow slopes, and capable of controlling your skis or splitboard in untracked snow. This ensures you get the most out of the ascent and descent with the group’s safety and efficiency in mind.

Unlike a typical backcountry ski outing, this Mt Baker experience includes glacier travel, snow and ice navigation, and a significant summit ascent before skiing back down. You’ll be climbing high above tree line, moving over crevassed glaciers, and skiing long, continuous descents that are not found at lift-served resorts. Guides provide terrain management and risk assessment instruction as part of the experience.

Mt Baker is known for huge snowpacks — in fact, it holds a world record for most annual snowfall — which makes it ideal for spring and early summer ski mountaineering. Snow quality and conditions can vary widely depending on the date and weather, from firm spring corn to deeper snowfields, so the exact experience can shift year to year. Guides adjust routes and timing to optimize safety and skiing quality.

Even before the summit push, guides will introduce and review relevant skills such as: skinning efficiency, glacial terrain management, proper use of crampons and ice axe, route finding on snow and ice, and decision making in alpine weather. These skills not only help with your Baker ascent/descent but also build competence for future backcountry objectives.

Participants are responsible for their personal ski touring or splitboard equipment — skis/splitboard with touring bindings, boots, skins, avalanche beacon/shovel/probe, helmet, and appropriate layered clothing. A list of technical gear needed will be sent upon request or booking, e.g. boots crampons, ice tool/axe, harness, etc.

Wasatch Mountain Guides provides professional ski mountaineering guides, group technical gear like ropes and glacier systems, and supports planning and on-mountain decisions. Personal items like food, lodging, and transportation are not included.
