Amanda has called the Wasatch home since 2010, and these mountains are the reason for just about everything that followed: splitboarding, alpine and ice and rock climbing, trail running, and a long list of things she hadn’t planned on loving. She is an AMGA Apprentice Splitboard Guide, Avalanche Pro Level 1, an avalanche educator, and is currently working through the AMGA Splitboard and Alpine tracks.

As a professional snowboarder she has carried out technical descents in the Alaska Range, Valdez, Ecuador, Europe, and British Columbia, along with plenty of time in the Cascades and the Eastern Sierra, occasionally bikepacking her way between peaks. That travel shaped how she reads terrain and snow, and it means very little in the Wasatch feels unfamiliar.

Between expeditions, Amanda teaches avalanche courses ranging from introductory rescue for brand-new backcountry travelers to advanced techniques, often working alongside wilderness medicine instructors. She gets the same amount of joy from facilitating someone’s first day in the backcountry as she does from riding a dream line. It’s all about being outside, connecting with the landscape, and learning to tap into the rhythms of nature.

Some of the highlights of guiding skiers have been teaching the unglamorous skills that actually open terrain up — skiing breakable crust without fighting it, hop turns in a tight couloir, and for splitboarders, learning to actually ski their split so that flat traverses and low-angle exits stop being the worst part of the day.
